CEREC Crowns in a Single Visit

Cerec Crowns Mechanicsburg, PA

CEREC® crowns are the fastest way to repair a damaged tooth with a dental crown, and they can be created in place in a single dental visit. They have transformed the way dentists and patients view the dental crown placement process, and they can help patients who need prompt treatment for a damaged or decayed tooth.

The CEREC crowns process

The experience with CEREC crowns is slightly different for every patient, so be sure to ask your dentist about what you can expect during treatment. However, there is a general process that most dentists use with CEREC crown placement that includes an oral examination, taking images of each tooth, receiving a crown and crown placement.

The oral examination

The dentist will first examine the tooth or teeth that are in question. CEREC crowns are most appropriate for repairing damaged teeth (chips, cracks, etc.), teeth that are worn down by teeth grinding and decayed teeth. They can also be used as a dental bridge to replace a missing tooth. Dentists may also recommend a CEREC crown after root canal therapy. The dentist will explain all available treatment options to ensure the patient can make an informed decision about the preferred method of treatment.

The crown customization

If the patient determines a CEREC crown is the best option, the dentist can begin customizing the crown. They will first take 3D images of the teeth that need a crown by using CAD (computer-aided design) technology. After the model is created, they will use a machine to create the CEREC crown, which only takes 15-30 minutes. The crown is made of a ceramic material that is strong and matches the shade of the surrounding natural teeth.

The crown placement

The next step is to polish the crown. Ideally, the CEREC crown should feel and appear smooth. After the crown is polished, the dentist can place the crown over the existing tooth in a non-invasive manner. They ensure it fits properly and make necessary adjustments if, for some reason, it does not. It may take some time to get used to the new crown, as it will alter the size, shape and feel of the natural tooth.

The aftercare and follow-up visit

CEREC crowns require little maintenance from the dentist, but a follow-up visit may be recommended to ensure a secure fit and no complications. Many patients have to get used to the new feel of the CEREC crown, although the adjustment period is typically less than a few days. Patients can care for their CEREC crowns through good oral hygiene, by avoiding hard and sticky candies or foods and by visiting the dentist for all follow-up checkups and cleanings.
